Jermaine Jenas, former England and Premier League midfielder, has publicly apologised after admitting to sending inappropriate text messages to two female colleagues on The One Show. The incident has led to his dismissal from the BBC, including his roles on Match of the Day and The One Show.
Reports surfaced on Thursday that Jenas had been removed from his positions following allegations of inappropriate behaviour. It was later revealed that the accusations involved unsolicited messages from female colleagues.
In an online meeting with BBC Human Resources and senior executives, Jenas was confronted with a series of explicit messages he had sent. Although he initially refrained from commenting, stating that the matter was with his lawyers, he acknowledged that there were "two sides to every story" and expressed his displeasure with the situation.
Speaking to The Sun on Friday, Jenas expressed deep remorse for his actions, saying, "I am ashamed, and I am deeply sorry. I have let myself down, my family, friends, and colleagues down, and I owe everyone an apology—especially the women I was messaging. I am so sorry for what I have put them through."
Jenas admitted to having personal issues that led to his behaviour, stating that he has a "self-destructive streak" and is seeking therapy to address these problems. He clarified that while nothing physical occurred, he considers his actions a form of cheating and accepts full responsibility for falling below the BBC's standards.
Jenas described the ordeal as "hellish" and shared that his 13-year marriage is now in crisis. His wife, Ellie, has reportedly kicked him out of their home, and they have not spoken properly since the news broke. Jenas also expressed concern for his children, particularly his two eldest daughters, who may face bullying as a result of the scandal.
