Bangalore Metro Sets Record with 8 Lakh Passengers in a Single Day in June
Bangalore's Namma Metro achieved a historic milestone in June, carrying an average of 7.5 lakh passengers per day, according to data released by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). The highest single-day passenger count was recorded on June 19, with 8,08,071 passengers. This record-breaking performance surpassed the previous peak of 7,18,170 passengers per day in May. The total ridership for June was 2,23,69,774 passengers, generating a revenue of Rs 58.23 crore. The highest revenue day was June 3, with earnings of Rs 2.51 crore.
In comparison, earlier in the year, the average daily ridership figures were 7.05 lakh in February, 7.01 lakh in January, and 6.88 lakh in December 2023. These numbers highlight the growing popularity and reliance on Bangalore Metro for daily commutes.
Looking ahead, BMRCL plans to extend the Green Line from Nagasandra to Madavara (BIEC) on Tumkur Road by October. The much-anticipated Yellow Line, running from RV Road to Bommasandra, is also expected to start by the end of this year. This 19.15 km stretch will operate with at least eight trains running at 15-minute intervals. Additionally, new lines from Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara and other routes under phases 2, 2A, and 2B, including the Silk Board to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), are expected to further boost passenger numbers.
Experimental traffic on the Nagasandra to Madavara route will begin on August 6. BMRCL plans to open this 3.7 km stretch for commercial operations by the end of September or the first week of October. Constructed for Rs 298 crore, the new line includes Manjunathnagar, Chikkabidarakallu (formerly Jindal Nagar), and Madavara (BIEC) stations. The final inspection by the Metro Rail Safety Commissioner is expected in the second week of September, following a month of trial operations.
